Getting your records from a clinic

Your scans and notes belong to your care. Asking for them is normal, and much easier before you fly home than afterwards.

Short answer

Ask for your records at the start, in writing, so the clinic expects it: copies of all X-rays and the CBCT scan, the final treatment summary, implant details and materials, in English. Collect them on your last day on a USB stick or by download link. If you need them later, write to the clinic’s official email with your name, dates of treatment and what you need, and keep a copy of the request.

The NHS treatment abroad checklist suggests discussing with your UK clinician how medical notes will be transferred, because they could be involved in your aftercare. With dental treatment abroad, the transfer usually means you: carrying the records home.

What to ask for

  • Images: panoramic X-rays before and after, any periapical X-rays, and the CBCT scan in DICOM format.
  • Treatment summary: what was done to each tooth, and when.
  • Implant details: brand, system, size, lot number and position. See implant cards.
  • Materials and shade for crowns, veneers and bridges.
  • Medicines given and prescribed.
  • Guarantee and aftercare instructions.

When to ask

  1. Before booking: “Will you give me copies of my scans and a treatment summary in English at the end?”
  2. On your first day: remind the coordinator.
  3. On your last day: collect them before you leave. Check the files open.

If you need them later

Write to the clinic’s official email address with:

  • Your full name and date of birth.
  • Dates of treatment.
  • Exactly what you need, and in what format.
  • Where to send them.

Keep a copy of your request. If there is no reply, follow up and copy the coordinator you dealt with.

Formats that work in the UK

  • CBCT scans as DICOM files.
  • X-rays as image files or DICOM.
  • Summaries as PDF, in English.

Common questions

Can a clinic refuse to give me my records?

Clinics may keep originals, but you should be able to get copies of your own health information. Ask politely and in writing.

Will my UK dentist accept Turkish records?

Yes, if they are clear. English summaries and standard image files (DICOM for CBCT) are easiest.

What is a DICOM file?

The standard format for medical scans. A CBCT scan in DICOM can be opened by most dental software in the UK.
