Hygiene and sterilisation: what to ask a clinic
You cannot inspect a clinic’s sterilisation room from the UK. You can ask questions that a careful clinic answers easily.
Ask how instruments are cleaned and sterilised (an autoclave, with packs opened in front of you), which items are single-use (needles, drills for implants, gloves), how the surgery room is prepared for implant surgery, and who checks sterilisation records. Good answers are specific and unhurried. Vague answers, or annoyance at the question, are a reason to ask again or look elsewhere.
The NHS checklist asks whether you are satisfied with the facilities and standards at the clinic where you will be treated. For dental work, and above all for implant surgery, hygiene is the standard that matters most and the one you can least see. These questions help.
Questions about instruments
- How are instruments sterilised? A good answer: cleaned, packed, and sterilised in an autoclave, a steam steriliser, then stored sealed until use.
- Will I see the packs opened? Sterile pouches opened in front of you at the chair are a visible sign.
- What is single-use? Needles, gloves, masks, suction tips, and for many clinics implant drills and bur kits after a set number of uses.
- Are handpieces (drills) sterilised between patients? They should be.
Questions about implant surgery
- Where is surgery done: a dedicated surgery room or a general treatment room?
- How is the room prepared: sterile drapes, sterile gowns for the surgeon?
- Who assists during surgery?
- What antibiotics or mouthwash protocol do you follow?
Questions about the laboratory
Impressions and trial teeth go between your mouth and the laboratory. Ask whether impressions are disinfected before they are sent. With digital scans this matters less.
How to judge the answers
- Specific beats reassuring: “Class B autoclave, packs dated, opened at the chair” is better than “we are very hygienic”.
- The dentist answering is better than a sales coordinator.
- Patience with the question is a good sign in itself.
At the clinic
- Fresh gloves for each patient, and after touching anything outside your mouth.
- Surfaces wiped or covered between patients.
- Instruments taken from sealed packs.
- Clean, tidy treatment rooms.
If what you see worries you, you can stop and ask. You are the patient, and it is your mouth.
Common questions
Can I ask to see the sterilisation area?
You can ask. Many clinics will show you. Even if they do not, watching sterile packs being opened at your appointment is a good sign.
Is infection control regulated in Turkey?
Health facilities are regulated by the Ministry of Health. That does not replace your own questions, and the register does not publish inspection results.
What are signs of infection after treatment?
Increasing pain or swelling after the first few days, pus, a bad taste, fever. Get help promptly; see if treatment goes wrong at home.
