Dental crowns in Turkey

A crown is a cover for a damaged tooth. It is the right treatment for a broken or root-filled tooth, and usually the wrong one for a healthy tooth you only want whiter.

Short answer

A crown is a custom-made cap that covers the whole of a tooth to restore its shape and strength. It suits teeth that are broken, heavily filled or root-treated. Crowns usually take one trip of five to seven days in Turkey. Because the tooth is filed down all round, ask why a crown is advised and get the guarantee period in writing.

When a crown is the right treatment

The Oral Health Foundation lists the usual reasons: a tooth that is badly damaged or broken, weakened by a large filling, root-canal treated, worn down or cracked. Crowns also hold bridges and sit on top of implants.

A crown is not usually the first choice for a healthy tooth that is only discoloured. Whitening, bonding or a veneer remove far less tooth. If a clinic proposes crowns on many healthy front teeth, ask why, and consider a UK second opinion. This is behind many “Turkey teeth” stories; see Turkey teeth and clinic standards.

Materials

  • Zirconia: strong, metal-free, common in Turkey for back teeth and bridges.
  • E-max (lithium disilicate) or layered porcelain: very natural-looking, often for front teeth.
  • Porcelain bonded to metal: strong and cheaper, but a dark line can show at the gum over time.

The trip

Usually one visit of five to seven days: preparation and scans, temporary crowns, then the final crowns fitted after the laboratory has made them. Ask whether the clinic has its own laboratory; see in-house lab or outside lab.

What to check

  • Why a crown and not a smaller treatment, tooth by tooth.
  • The material, by name.
  • The guarantee period for crowns, in writing. See which clinics publish one in the crown ranking.

Precious Dental charges £150 per zirconia crown.

Common questions

Zirconia or porcelain crowns?

Zirconia is very strong and suits back teeth and bridges; layered porcelain or E-max often looks more natural on front teeth. Many clinics use both.

How long do crowns last?

Many years with good care. Precious Dental guarantees crowns for five years; other clinics’ terms are on their register entries.

Can a crown be done in one visit?

Some ceramic crowns can be milled and fitted the same day. Most are made in a laboratory over a few days, so plan about a week.
