Your first day at the clinic
Day one is when the plan becomes real. Knowing the usual order helps you stay in control of it.
On the first day most clinics collect you from the hotel, take a CBCT scan and X-rays, examine your mouth, and confirm or change the treatment plan and price. You then sign consent forms and usually pay the balance or part of it. Some treatment, such as extractions or tooth preparation, may start the same day. Ask for the final plan in writing before you sign or pay, and ask what has changed from the quote.
You land, a driver meets you, and the next morning you are in the clinic. For many patients the first day moves quickly. This is the usual order, and the points where you should pause.
1. Arrival and paperwork
A coordinator welcomes you, takes your passport details and asks you to fill in a medical history form. Be complete: medicines (especially blood thinners and bone medicines such as bisphosphonates), allergies, heart conditions, diabetes, smoking.
2. Scans and X-rays
Usually a panoramic X-ray and, for implants, a CBCT scan. Photos of your teeth and face for planning cosmetic work.
3. Examination and consultation
The dentist examines your mouth, looks at the scans with you and explains the plan. The Oral Health Foundation advises making sure you are examined by a qualified dentist and given a clear plan and full cost breakdown before agreeing to treatment.
Pause here. Ask:
- Has anything changed from my quote? Why?
- Who will do each part of the treatment?
- Which implant brand, which materials?
- What happens on each day of this trip, and on the next?
4. The final plan and price
You should receive the final plan in writing, with the price. Compare it with your quote line by line. If extras have appeared, see extra costs after you arrive.
5. Consent
You sign consent forms for the treatment. Read them, and ask for an English copy. See consent forms and your plan.
6. Payment
Many clinics take the balance, or part of it, on the first day. Ask for a receipt in the clinic’s legal name. See paying safely.
7. Treatment may begin
Extractions, implant surgery or tooth preparation may start the same afternoon. If you would rather have a night to think after the consultation, ask for that when you book. A good clinic will plan around it.
After day one
- Keep the aftercare instructions by your bed.
- Take medicines exactly as prescribed.
- Save the clinic’s out-of-hours number.
- Eat soft, cool food.
Common questions
Will treatment start on the first day?
Often yes, especially extractions or preparation for crowns. If you want time to think after the scan, say so in advance.
Do I meet the dentist who will treat me?
You should. Ask in advance, and ask again on the day if you are seen by someone else.
What should I bring?
Passport, your medicines and a list of them, your UK X-rays, your written quote and guarantee, and something to eat that is soft for later.
